Storage Sheds on a Budget - an American Dream Come True

The young couple's search for a home began soon after their little boy brought home a stray dog. 'He was a Golden Retriever' says Jessica Granger. 'We were sure somebody missed him but nobody ever called, so 'Ben' was ours.' Their landlord didn't share their enthusiasm and told the family the dog would have to go. 'I guess we didn't realize what we were getting into' says Jessica. We started dreaming about a house in the country but when we were pre-qualified for a loan, the expression, 'Champagne taste, beer budget really hit home.'

Not the sort of people to give up hope, the Grangers searched for alternative solutions. We found a nice old, home on a corner lot with a maple tree big enough for a tire swing. Better yet, the seller was willing to write a land contract and the Grangers accepted. 'It wasn'Äôt too far from our jobs and the house and yard suited us but it was a bit more than we were used to paying and we had to tighten our belts .' Moving in on the first of October, they quickly realized their storage space wasn'Äôt adequate. Luckily an old shed sat on their fence line 'It was a little shabby but I figured I'd paint it next spring' said Tom 'But the wooden doors were rotten and fell off their hinges the first time I opened them.' That'Äôs when the Grangers decided to get a new shed but they quickly realized that their budget was too restrictive. 'That'Äôs when I took on my first household project and started looking for replacement doors.' said Granger.

Tom soon realized how hard it was to find shed supplies. 'Everybody wanted to sell me a new shed but I just needed new doors.' Granger kept looking and finally found a shed builder that was sympathetic. 'Not only would he sell doors in whatever size I needed, I could totally redo my shed, piece by piece from his cataloge.' Deciding to surprise his wife, Tom casually asked Jessicah what color she wanted the shed to be painted. 'Same as the house'Äù was her response and Granger put his plan into action.'

Late in October, when the big maple turned brilliant red and his wife went to work, Tom played hooky and got busy. That aftenoon, Jessica'Äôs car pulled around the corner and screeched to a stop. Where once had stood a dismal shed, a pretty yellow building basked in autumn's glow. Its tidy yellow doors, trimmed in white closed perfectly. Orange chrysanthemums spilled from a green flower box, sporting matching shutters on either side of what had been, a dim little window.

Grinning, Jessica said, the best part was when the kids pointed and said, 'Look up there Mama.' There it was, the piece de' resistance - a darling little yellow cupola with a Golden Retriever weathervane on top of it. 'That'Äôs when I really knew we were home. There's something about dogs and kids and a yard and about finding a way to get what you need. It's something profoundly American and I was so proud of my husband for figuring out a way to make all of our dreams come true.'
